Child care is a fact of life today and parents of very young children are in the workforce in record numbers. Child care provides an essential infrastructure, enabling parents to be employed outside the home and earn necessary income.

The mission of the Oregon Commission for Child Care is to advise the governor and legislature on the issues, problems, and solutions related to affordable, quality child care in Oregon; and to advocate for the availability of safe, quality and affordable child care.

Lynne Angland was a Commissioner and diligent advocate for children and families. She immensely contributed to the improvement in the lives of Oregonians through her service, passion and leadership. Lynne served as the Vice-Chair of the Commission for Child Care beginning in 2004 until her recent death in November 2008. As a former owner of a child care center, which she opened as a benefit to her employees, Lynne personally understood that quality child care is a workforce issue as well as an early childhood education issue.

With that in mind, the Commission has set out to shine a light on the good things happening in the child care system in Oregon. The Lynne Angland Award for Contributions to the Improvement of Child Care in Oregon has been established to recognize people and organizations who work to improve the safety, quality, affordability or accessibility of child care either at their local level or statewide. This is an annual award which we hope will both memorialize Lynne and recognize the good things happening in Oregon to improve our child care system.

To nominate a person, facility or organization, please submit an essay of not more than 250 words to the Commission for Child Care via mail or email explaining the contributions, whether on a local or statewide level, they have made to improving child care in Oregon.

The deadline for submission is August 31, 2009. The recipient will be announced no later than September 30 with a subsequent honoring of the recipient to take place at the October Commission for Child Care meeting.

Submissions may be sent to:
