Much of the media coverage on global events today focuses on what divides us. Increasingly, the rhetoric has become one of exclusion and protectionism. By focusing on a case study of neighborhood activists in Berlin, Germany, this talk will look at ways in which we can bridge differences by coming together to share meals. We will explore ways in which food can be used to build community while celebrating diversity.

NPR’s Lulu Garcia-Navarro moved back to the U.S. after years abroad as a foreign correspondent in places such as the Middle East and Latin America, which have been heavily impacted by U.S. policy. How does the rest of the world see us and how do we see the world? She will share examples from her years of field reporting and from her current role as host of NPR’s Sunday show.
