On October 10, custom software development firm Five Talent will host an AWS GameDay in Bend, one of only five promoted in the US this year. The workshop will also be a program highlight at the upcoming AWS re:Invent 2019 Conference in Las Vegas this December.

AWS GameDay is an interactive, team-based learning exercise designed to give players a chance to put their Amazon Web Services (AWS) skills to the test in a real-world, gamified, risk-free environment. Most importantly, it provides a fun, hands-on opportunity to learn more about the potential of AWS without the step-by-step instructions given in workshops or classroom-style sessions.

Following a fictitious narrative featuring brand new startup Unicorn. Rentals, AWS GameDay will give participants a new hire onboarding scenario with different challenges to solve throughout the event. Attendees will work in groups of four as mini DevOps teams, guided by Comingdeer and Thomas Robinson and Andrew Bostrom, Solutions Architects at Amazon Web Services, Inc. Sponsored by OSU Cascades, the workshop will be held on its Bend campus.

“GameDay is a fun, fast-paced opportunity to learn AWS best practices, services and architecture patterns, as well as group problem-solving,” explains Five Talent CTO Ryan Comingdeer. “We’re excited to bring the event to the Bend tech community.”

“This is an amazing opportunity for our students to get hands-on cloud computing experience,” says Yong Bakos, program lead and instructor of OSU Cascades’ Computer Science Department. “We’re happy to support Five Talent and AWS.”

To participate, attendees need a laptop and charger, a web browser, the AWS CLI and an SSH client pre-installed on their machines. Five Talent will provide a free AWS account for teams to work in throughout the day. The event will take place from 1:30 to 7:30pm at OSU Cascades, Room TYKH 206. Participation is free, with dinner and beverages provided.
