Members of Bend’s High Desert Civil Air Patrol Squadron conducted a training exercise in preparation for the predicted massive earthquake/tsunami that is known as the Cascadia Event. Reports state that this earthquake is at least 60 years overdue.
Because of the expected devastation, it is likely that regular communication lines (land lines, cell phones, internet, etc.) will be down and other forms of communication will need to be used. “We are prepared for that eventuality and will be communicating with other squadrons in our state without the use of standard communicating devices, simulating the actual event,” explained By 2nd Lt. Faye L. Phillips.
The practice/training exercise was an all-day exercise and consisted of using HF and VHF radios to establish communication with other units across the state. Aircraft were launched in order to establish communication and act as a relay between Bend Base and other units.
The Klamath Falls Squadron was on-site to assist us. Bend acted as the Incident Command Post, the communications hub for the entire state. “Not only will we be responsible for establishing communication with our other squadrons across the state, but we will also be responsible for simulated search and rescue missions and for aerial surveillance, looking for and reporting on the extent of damage to roads and other infrastructure,” added By 2nd Lt. Phillips.
“Everyone participating in this training exercise is dedicated to being prepared in the event of an emergency such as the predicted Cascadia Earthquake. This exercise will make sure all participating members of our units are capable and prepared and will also make sure that our equipment is in good working order. Our motto is “Ever Vigilant” and this exercise is one way we live up to our motto.”
