KPOV 88.9 High Desert Community Radio is holding its spring membership drive from April 17-24. KPOV is the only non-profit public radio station originating from Bend, broadcasting throughout Deschutes County and the Prineville area. It is supported by listeners and local businesses and powered by volunteers.

2015 is KPOV’s 10th Anniversary serving Central Oregon. KPOV went on the air for the first time on June 25, 2005 as a two-watt, low-power FM station reaching the Bend area. KPOV’s Bond Street studio was built and operated by volunteers. All original programming was produced by volunteer local DJs, as it still is today.

In 2006 KPOV began innovating by creating Kids Radio Camps and then Youth Radio Hour in 2007 to give local youth a voice on the radio. KPOV was also the first local station to stream all of its content on line, in 2007, and then to offer on-demand access to local shows in 2008.

Continuing its list of firsts, in 2011, KPOV became the first low-power FM station in the country to move to full power to reach most of Central Oregon. Recently, KPOV began a daily local affairs show, The Point, hosted by Central Oregonians and focusing on local issues, events, and happenings.

“While we have grown and branched out, KPOV has also stayed true to our roots. More than 10 of KPOV’s earliest local music shows continue to anchor our diverse schedule. We still focus on engaging our community in creating high quality radio programming for Central Oregon.,” says Pearl Stark, KPOV station manager.

The goal of KPOV’s membership drive is to raise $22,000 to help support KPOV programming and operations throughout 2015. In honor of their 10th anniversary, KPOV has shortened this membership drive by two days to get listeners back to the programs they love more quickly.

Along with thank you gifts at various member donation levels, KPOV will hold a daily prize drawing on-air. Donations received before 5pm. April 17 will also be entered into an Early Bird prize drawing for a $50.00 gift card to Zydeco Restaurant.

Gifts include 10th Anniversary baseball caps, T-shirts and Silipint glasses. Drawing prizes include gift cards, mountain bike rentals, and a grand prize drawing for two tickets to the Lyle Lovett concert in July at the Les Schwab Amphitheater.

KPOV is a listener-supported, volunteer-powered, nonprofit community radio station that broadcasts at 88.9 FM and live on the web at kpov.org. High Desert Community Radio offers locally-produced programs not heard on any other radio stations in the area, including civic affairs, election coverage, and the most diverse music programming in Central Oregon. KPOV also features several nationally syndicated programs, such as Democracy Now!, that no other stations broadcast in our area.

Underwriting is available and affordable for nonprofit organizations and local businesses. For a program schedule, underwriting information, to donate or to volunteer, call 541-322-0863 or visit the website at kpov.org.
