BendBroadband Vault Awarded Prestigious Facility Certification

BEND, OR – June 29, 2011 – BendBroadband announced receipt of the Uptime Institute Tier III Constructed Facility Certification for the Vault, a 30,000 square foot carbon neutral enterprise-class colocation and disaster recovery data center in Central Oregon. The Vault joins an elite group of colocation facilities worldwide and is the first Tier III facility on the West Coast. The Vault received Tier III Certification for both design and facility construction.

“We applaud BendBroadband for their achievement of building a true world-class data center, as validated by their Tier III Facility Certification. This award distinguishes BendBroadband from the claims of self-certified data center service providers, which are often inaccurate. It also demonstrates their commitment to a premiere level of service, providing assurance to their clients that they are capable of delivering the highest levels of availability,” said Julian Kudritzki, vice president, Uptime Institute.

Tier III Certification requires the data center infrastructure to be Concurrently Maintainable, meaning that each and every capacity component and element in the distribution (multiple independent distribution paths are required) for power, cooling, and network can be removed from service on a planned basis without impacting any of the IT equipment. All IT equipment is dual-powered and fully compatible within the topology of a site’s architecture.

The Vault was built and designed with Tier III as well as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification as two primary goals. The Vault boasts multiple redundant systems (N+1 design) to ensure Concurrent Maintainability including multiple backup generators, cooling units, and uninterruptable power supplies (UPS). In each case there is one more system installed than is required.  Every aspect of the Vault was designed with the cooling and redundancy requirements for Tier III status approval as a core objective.

The data center is built to tightly integrate the server cabinets with innovative cooling designs based on KyotoCooling solutions. The placement of cabinet rows within the highly efficient, engineered cooling plan allows hot air to passively flow up and away from the server cabinets, while drawing the cool air directly into clients’ computing equipment. Vault clients also have -significant flexibility for low/high density rack configurations and power options (such as single phase / three phase). This flexibility enables the Vault to quickly adapt to the changing requirements of customers.

“The Vault offers a unique value proposition with its combination of Tier III reliability, SSAE-16 measure of operational excellence, and LEED Gold environmental responsibility,” said Leonard Weitman, VP Technical Operations, BendBroadband.
