Local Organizations Partner to Help Homeless Veterans and their Pets

A group of local non-profit organizations and local businesses are collaborating to provide a day of free veterinary services (May 5) for pets belonging to local homeless Veterans.

Central Oregon Veteran’s Outreach will partner with Bend Spay and Neuter Project, Dr. Wendy Meredith, the COCC Vet Tech Program, Bend Veterinary Clinic and Chiro for Critters to provide this free day of service. Bend Pet Express, Humane Society of Central Oregon and Ruffwear will be providing donations of pet food, toys, collars, treats, and vaccinations for this event. Bend Spay and Neuter Project will be providing free spay and neuter surgeries as well as microchips for all pets.

The clinic will take place on May 5 at Bend Spay and Neuter Project, 910 SE Wilson. Services will be available for the dog and cat companions belonging to homeless and displaced Veterans who are part of the COVO program. Each pet

will leave with a leash, collar, food, and a bag of toys/treats. The goal of this pilot clinic is to serve 20-30 clients and to eventually hold clinics throughout the year depending on need. “Our Veterans have given so much to us, the least we can do is make sure they are able to provide their best friends, often times their only companion, with proper veterinary care as well as items we sometimes take for granted such as toys and treats”, says BSNP Executive Director Megan Wellinghoff.

Donations will be accepted on an ongoing basis at COVO, 123 NW Franklin Ave. and Bend Spay and Neuter Project, 910 SE Wilson ste. B-1. This pilot clinic is still in need of monetary donations to help cover the cost of providing each dog with a Deschutes County License. Licenses are $12 each and we anticipate needing approximately $350 to cover this cost. You may also drop off pet supplies at Cascade Business News, 404 NE Norton, leave at back door on weekends.
