Girls on the Run (GOTR), an affiliate program of Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Oregon, announces its annual fundraising event, a 5k/10k run on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 28.

Race start and finish is on Shevlin Hixon Drive behind the Les Schwab Amphitheater stage, beginning at 9am.

Registration is now open and can be completed online at: www.ultrasignup.com, at Fleet Feet Sports, 320 NW Galveston or at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Oregon’s Downtown Club, 500 NW Wall St. Prices are:  $25 for the 10k, $20 for the 5k and $10 for the Gobbler’s Walk. Long-sleeved tech t-shirts will also be available to order for $20.

Runners and walkers of all skill levels are encouraged to join this festive, family friendly event. The event will include a timed 5K and 10K course as well as a family friendly Gobbler’s Walk. 5K (3.1 mile) loop course will take place on flat, paved pathways and trails through the Old Mill District along the beautiful Deschutes River.

The 10K course will complete the loop twice. The Central Oregon Thanksgiving Classic was originally started by Girls on the Run of Deschutes County in 2009 as the primary fundraising event for the organization. Now in its 5th official year, the race has grown to host over 1,000 runners and walkers every Thanksgiving morning in Bend’s Old Mill District.

This 5k/10k race serves as the main source of funding for GOTR and is also the final goal for the young women participating in the program. Girls on the Run is a life-changing program that encourages 3rd- 8th grade girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through running.

GOTR combines physical training for a 3.1 mile (5k) running event with lessons that encourage the girls to make healthy lifestyle choices. Through running, playing games and discussing important issues, girls develop self confidence, a sense of achievement and practice in team building.

Lessons promote healthy lifestyle choices and address issues that include dealing with body image and resisting peer pressure. www.deschutescountygotr.org.
