Popular Bend bakery expands to meet growing local demand for its baked goods.
NorthWest Crossing, a mixed-use neighborhood on Bend’s west side, today announced that its neighborhood center will welcome Sparrow Bakery’s second Bend location this fall. Sparrow Bakery was founded in 2006 and quickly rose to local fame for its unique baked creations. The company will retain its flagship location on Scott Street in SE Bend. The new NorthWest Crossing location will eventually employ about 20 people.
Whitney Keatman, who co-owns the store with wife Jessica Keatman, said, “We have outgrown our current space and need a larger kitchen to help meet local demand. We love the idea of our new location being in a neighborhood – I believe bakeries belong in neighborhoods. We know NorthWest Crossing is a perfect fit for us as we have enjoyed being a part of their Farmers Market since its inception.”
The company’s new NorthWest Crossing location is nearly 2,000 square feet, providing ample space for the bakery’s new kitchen and about four times the seating they have at their original space. Primarily a retail bakery, Sparrow Bakery in NorthWest Crossing will be offering a breakfast and lunch menu. “One of the biggest challenges we’ve had at our current location is capacity.
This new space will have enough seating for people to be able to sit and enjoy the atmosphere, which will be very comfortable and inviting,” said Jessica. “Our fans in the community have given us the gift of their loyalty, so we are looking forward to giving a gift back by being accessible to more people at our second location.”
Whitney, who originally founded the bakery in 2006, began her career at bakeries in the Portland Oregon area. When she moved to Bend, she continued to work in baking before starting her own company. After attending culinary school in the Bay Area and working in kitchen management positions, Jessica moved to Bend to join the Sparrow Bakery team in 2008, and became co-owner shortly after.
Jessica continued, “Sparrow Bakery is really about unique and excellent experiences, we seek to cultivate a sense of magic and community. This is the philosophy we’ve trained our staff with and will continue at our new location.”
