A Vision for the Future: Oregon’s Integrated Water Resources Strategy Stakeholders Co-Host Community Meeting

Local organizations with an interest in the future of water management for
instream and out of stream use are co-hosting a presentation May 31 for Oregon Water Resources Department staff about the state’s Integrated Water Resources Strategy.

In 2012, Oregon adopted its first innovative Integrated Water Resources Strategy (IWRS).
Last year, Oregon Water Resources Department (OWRD) sought recommendations from citizens for updates to the IWRS, including hosting an open house in Bend. The draft revised IWRS is now complete, and OWRD is back in Bend inviting community feedback on the report.

The groups co-hosting the program are:
Coalition for the Deschutes (lead organizer)
Trout Unlimited, Deschutes Redbands
Great Old Broads for Wilderness
FANs of Deschutes Canyon
Deschutes River Conservancy
Deschutes Basin Board of Control

The mission of the Coalition for the Deschutes is to bring the wild back to our river so fish, wildlife, and people can thrive. Vision is a healthy and resilient Deschutes River, now and for the future. They are dedicated to being a voice for the river, to educating our community about issues facing the river, and to building a broad-based river constituency that advocates for a healthy and restored Deschutes River.

Changes are coming…
Aging water infrastructure, a warming climate, and more people moving to Oregon from warmer, drier regions are already happening, and more is in our future.

Families, farmers, and fish will all be affected.
In 2012, Oregon adopted its first innovative Integrated Water Resources Strategy (IWRS). The IWRS has been updated, and Oregon Water Resources Department is seeking feedback on the report.

If IWRS sounds wonky…
then think of it terms of dealing with climate change and drought, ensuring that we have healthy ecosystems, making sure we have adequate water for cities and agriculture, and more.

As stakeholders in the future…
with a vested interest in how rivers and groundwater are managed, this is our opportunity to have a say about how the state navigates water management in the Deschutes Basin and throughout Oregon.
