A major earthquake on the Oregon coast will have far reaching impact, including in Central Oregon. Join geology, emergency and preparedness experts at The Tower Theatre at 7pm on October 20 for Shaken III: What are You and Your Business Doing to Prepare?, a presentation exploring how a severe earthquake in the next 50 years will affect those living and working in and around Central Oregon.

Speakers include geologist and Oregon State University – Cascades instructor Daniele McKay. McKay studies volcanic activity and focuses her research on central Oregon volcanoes. Her students are involved in projects including mapping ash deposits produced by geologically young volcanoes and field opportunities with the U.S. Geological Survey and U.S. Forest Service. McKay’s professional interests extend to how societies prepare for and respond to natural disasters, especially volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. She has worked with Deschutes County, the Oregon Office of Emergency Management, Oregon Partnership for Disaster Resilience, and the Red Cross on natural hazard preparedness and mitigation issues.

Presenters also include Kelley Okolita, director of disaster management services at Cambia Health Solutions and Sgt. Nathan Garibay, emergency service manager for the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office. Okolita serves on the board of directors for the American Red Cross Cascades Region. Garibay was recently named Emergency Manager of the Year by the Oregon Office of Emergency Management.

Shaken events provide the public with the most recent scientific discoveries about the Cascadia subduction zone, as well as emergency and preparedness information. They are a partnership of the American Red Cross Central and Easter Oregon Chapter, St. Charles Health System and Oregon State University – Cascades.

The Central and Easter Oregon Chapter of the American Red Cross serves Baker, Crook, Deschutes, Grant, Harney, Jefferson, Morrow, Umatilla, Union, Wallowa, Wheeler counties and Warm Springs Reservation.
