Started in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard and Craig Mathews—both local businesspeople and environmentalists—the 1% for the Planet program has been working hard for the last 10 years to preserve, protect and keep the earth healthy and sustainable for generations to come.
Chouinard has been a leader in environmental causes since 1985 when he first started pledging 1% of his company’s annual revenue toward helping the environment.
Since then, Patagonia has awarded over $50 million dollars in cash and donations to more than 3,300 non-profit organizations around the world that protect the earth’s sustainable health. Chouinard’s leadership was instrumental in influencing Craig Matthews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, to seek him out. In 2002, they created 1% for the Planet, an alliance of businesses around the world that understand their accountability to future generations for the condition the earth.
More and more firms like The Skjersaa Group are acting on the idea that business isn’t always about profit and loss. Within the first ten years of the program, companies around the world donated over $100 million dollars to protect the earth, and as of 2015, 1% for the Planet has over 1,200 members worldwide, in 48 countries.
