The award-winning documentary film SPACE, HOPE and CHARITY will be shown at the Art House at 6:30pm on Monday, October 26, followed by a conversation with the film’s subject, Dr. Charity Woodrum; her mentor Dr. Scott Fisher, director of the University of Oregon’s Pine Mountain Observatory; and Oregon filmmaker Sandy Cummings.
The film follows the remarkable journey of Charity Woodrum from growing up in poverty in rural Oregon, through tragedy, as she doggedly pursues her dream of becoming a NASA astrophysicist. Dr. Woodrum was a student at the University of Oregon when she lost her husband and three-year-old son tragically. With help from childhood friends, mentors and perfect strangers, she was able to get her life back on track, finding purpose and meaning by exploring far-off galaxies.
“I’ll always be grateful to the U.O. community and Eugene for the support they offered me during my darkest days,” Dr. Woodrum said. “I wouldn’t be where I am today if not for their kindness and compassion. I’m excited to share my story with the community.”
“We often hear about people’s worst days when they happen, but we don’t often hear what happened next. Charity’s story is incredibly inspiring,” Cummings said.
SPACE, HOPE and CHARITY has won Best Documentary, Audience Choice, and Most Inspiring Film awards at film festivals. The special Eugene screening is made possible by AAUW Eugene-Lane, an American Association of University Women local affiliate dedicated to advancing equity for women, girls, and non-binary individuals through advocacy, education, and research, and with support from Lynn Frohnmayer.
Proceeds from the event will support the Woody’s Stars Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation, an education fund created in memory of Charity’s son; and AAUW Eugene-Lane’s STEM projects.
