Assistance League of Bend is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has been bringing comfort and hope to local children and adults facing hardship for more than 35 years.
Guided by compassion, each of its initiatives is designed to meet real needs with dignity and respect.
At the heart of its mission is Operation School Bell, which provides more than 2,700 students with new school clothes, shoes, and coats each year. Children select items that fit and reflect their personal style, fostering dignity, confidence, and a sense of belonging. The benefits extend well beyond physical comfort — new clothes nurture emotional well-being, boost self-esteem, reduce the likelihood of bullying, and inspire success in and out of the classroom.
Assistance League of Bend is the leading provider of new clothing for children in need throughout Deschutes County, where 50 percent of school-aged children qualify for free and reduced-price meals based on household income. A local teacher shared: “I’ve seen the positive impact of new clothes — including improved attendance, better behavior and greater social and school engagement.”
Operation School Bell also includes complementary initiatives that support children through high school formal wear, literacy programs, cooking education, and holiday celebrations.
In addition, Assistance League of Bend supports community members facing the challenges of illness and aging. Volunteers provide handmade hats and other comfort items for individuals undergoing cancer treatment and bring care and connection to seniors by providing hygiene items, handmade greeting cards, and holiday gifts to Medicaid recipients living in local assisted living facilities.
Assistance League of Bend’s ability to transform lives is made possible through the generosity of the Central Oregon community. Every contribution stays local, and with no paid staff, the greatest possible share of every dollar directly supports the programs and people they serve.
