Science Pub in Bend, Oregon Explores Beneath Earth’s Surface Using 3-D Imaging

Oregon State University – Cascades continues its Science Pub offerings with a presentation by Adam Schultz, a professor of geology and geophysics in OSU’s College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences. Schultz will present In Hot Water: Investigations Beneath the Earth’s Surface Using Electromagnetic Methods on Tuesday, November 18 in Father Luke’s Room at McMenamins in Bend.

In his presentation, Schultz will explore the Earth’s subsurface — beneath the Cascades, under cornfields in the mid-west, and beneath the Newberry Enhanced Geothermal Systems Project in Central Oregon — through high resolution three-dimensional images.

Schultz and his team are actively engaged in novel methods of imaging beneath the surface, from near-surface investigations for immediate use, to geothermal investigations, to deeper investigations that reveal new information about the evolution of the North American continent.

Currently, OSU has more active field projects underway using newly emerging electromagnetic methods to image the Earth’s crust and mantle, than any other university in the United States.

A professor of geology and geophysics, Schultz received his Ph.D. at the University of Washington in 1986. He came to Oregon State University in 2003 and directs the National Geoelectromagnetic Facility, which loans geophysics equipment to scientists, industry and government. His research interests include geothermal systems, the Cascade volcanic arc, the Cascadia subduction zone and innovative geophysical imaging techniques.

His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, and a variety of other federal, industry and foreign funding sources.

Science Pubs take place from 5:30-7:30pm. Networking and food and beverage service begin at 5:30 p.m., and the presentation begins at 6:30 p.m. Science Pubs are free to community members, but reservations are required. Space is limited to 100 guests.
