February 19 Forum: Nationwide there has been an explosion of businesses choosing to become social entrepreneurs. Their for-profit businesses are called Benefit Companies and they focus on more other than making money. They want to have a positive impact on their communities. Why are businesses becoming Benefit Companies? How has becoming a Benefit Company impacted businesses?
Oregon joined movement when its Benefit Company law took effect in January 2014. Oregon is second in the nation with the highest number of registered Benefit Companies.
A Benefit Company is able to consider its impact on society and the environment in its business-decision-making process, in addition to earning a profit.
What’s behind this national movement? Why are businesses becoming Benefit Companies? How has becoming a Benefit Company impacted businesses?
