This Saturday, September 12, Cathy Mendell of Elevation Capital Strategies, is hosting Walk for Water to benefit the Orphanages of Kenya. The project is specifically designed to meet the needs of an orphanage currently housing up to 60 children by funding the construction of a well on the property that provides water for drinking, cooking, bathing and growing crops.
Five years ago, on the savannah outside of Nairobi, a fledgling orphanage was destroyed during a dangerous election cycle. When Cathy and her husband Arlan learned about the orphanage and all of the children who were displaced by its destruction, they decided to oversee the start of a new orphanage which now serves 36 children.
Arlan makes two trips a year to the orphanage, spending a few months a year to make sure the kids are being taken care of because the orphanage is run entirely by volunteers. He’ll be making another trip soon, probably in October.
Saturday’s fundraiser consists of a five-mile walk starting at 9am and a two-mile walk starting at 10:30am. Participants begin the walk with an empty bucket provided by Elevation Capital Strategies. When participants reach the halfway point of their respective walk, they will fill up their bucket and walk back. The walk serves as a glimpse of what others around the world do on a daily basis to survive.
The walk begins at Elevation Capital Strategies on the outside patio overlooking River Bend Park. Those interested in donating and not participating in the walk can do so by either making a donation online or sponsoring a surrogate to walk in their place. The event concludes at 1pm and lunch is provided.
