The Bend Area Habitat for Humanity ReStore will unveil a beautiful mural made with scrap metal and other materials from the ReStore and to celebrate a new solar system with 184 panels on Tuesday, December 1. And due to the community’s support, the Bend ReStore has had a very successful year and the organization has begun planning for a 6600 square foot expansion.
The success of this year has allowed the organization to move from building three to four homes a year and jump to six to seven homes this fiscal year.
The incredibly creative mural, A Bend in the River, on the Bend ReStore’s East and South facing wall made from scrap metal was the idea of Stemach Design & Architecture and designed by local artist, Justyn Livingston.
Livingston incorporated pallet strap cutoffs, bailing wire and other hardware to create a shimmering representation of the Deschutes River’s path. Many Bend Area Habitat volunteers participated in the process. Rochelle Schueler, a friend and fellow artist, collaborated in the creation, completion and installation. Space to work on the project was generously donated by the soon to open, Maker’s Mill.
The solar electric system was the inspiration and brain child of Sunlight Solar Energy, Stemach Design & Architecture and the Bend Area Habitat team. Three grants from The Energy Trust of Oregon, Pacific Power’s Blue Sky Program and Oregon Department of Energy made this project possible. The 184 panel solar system includes a 41.6 kw array on the West facing roof, and a 21.8 kw array on the South facing timber awning, designed by local architect, Stacey Stemach of Stemach Design & Architecture and installed by Sunlight Solar Energy. The system should provide close to 90 percent of the buildings electricity needs.

About Bend Habitat ReStore
The Bend ReStore opened in 1997 at Pakit Liquidators in a designated 500 square foot space to accept and sell donations of new and used building supplies and household goods to help fund Bend Area Habitat. Today the ReStore is located on 3rd Street (Highway 97) across from Robberson Ford and Wagner Mall, with approximately 18,000 sf of retail space. The ReStore funds nearly 3/4ths of the operating costs of Bend Area Habitat for Humanity and facilitates the reuse of more than two million pounds annually of building material, furniture and major appliances.
