The 3-D Printing course begins February 18 and continues for two weeks on successive Monday nights from 6-8pm and an individually scheduled 1-hour session with the instructor. These classes will be held at the E::SPACE facilities @ The Bridge, 48 SE Bridgeford Blvd, Suite 180.
Introduction to 3-D Printing for Thinkers, Innovators, Designers and Makers
This is an opportunity for everyone with an interest in 3-D printing to go from a beginner to successfully leveraging 3-D Printing as a useful tool in their design process?.
Course Description
An introductory level class designed to introduce participants to 3-D printing and the related software. This is a beginners course and prior experience is not necessary. The goal for this class is to teach students how to fit the technology into their existing design work flows. The student will learn how to evaluate the many 3-D printer models on the market to choose the best product for their needs.
The class is broken into two group sessions and one follow up individually scheduled break out session. The two group sessions are 2-hours each. The first session is focused on breaking down 3-D printing into its core elements and capabilities. The second session is focused on giving students the benefit of the instructors real world experience. From design tips to knowing what type of printer is best suited for a particular print job, this class will give you a running start into the world of 3-D printing Homework assignment are assigned between the sessions. These homework projects are designed to help the student integrate the large amount of material covered in the group sessions.
What is 3-D printing?
3-D printing is a process of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital file. In an additive process an object is created by laying down successive layers of material until the entire object is created. 3-D printing can communicate your best designs and ideas, quickly and accurately. You can build accurate functional concept models, rapid prototypes, and product mockups.
With 3-D printing you can see your product before it ever goes into production. Functional prototypes can be made in hours and then finished – even drilled – to give you a reliable representation of the actual manufactured product. Creating functional prototypes allows you to quickly spot design flaws and make the appropriate adjustments early and often throughout the design process. Working in 3-D is fantastic fun and allows for almost boundless creative expression. With 3-D modeling you can view the artwork on a screen or even make a high quality 2D print, but with 3-D printing you can reach out and touch it or run your fingers over its surface texture, and feel the subtleties of its contours or its weight.
The class will be facilitated by Eric Harvey, Mechanical Engineer and founder of Mason-re and Swim Left Products. He draws on a background of working with many design projects and startups to show students how to leverage 3-D printing to rapidly decrease product development time.
