In honor of Winter Comes: Oregon’s Nordic Ski History, the newest exhibit at the Deschutes Historical Museum, Silver Moon Brewing has created Skyliners IPA. Silver Moon will donate $1 per pint of Skyliners IPA on tap to the museum through the month of April.

In addition, a special Skyliners’ IPA Bottle Launch party will be at Silver Moon Brew Pub, 24 NW Greenwood Avenue in Bend, Tuesday, April 5 from 5-7pm to introduce the 22 oz. Skyliners IPA (Hop Nob). DHM is asking for a $10 donation per bottle or $110 per case. The launch party will also feature vintage ski photos and rare footage of ski jumping off Pilot Butte in 1965.

The Skyliners IPA and label is a tribute to the men and women of Bend’s first ski/mountaineering club. Founded in 1927, Skyliners introduced outdoor recreation to Central Oregon.

Winter Comes: Oregon’s Nordic Ski History details the strong influence of the Scandinavian culture that pushed Central Oregon to the forefront of Nordic skiing in the early 1920s.

The 1,200 square foot, interactive exhibit features oral histories from sons and daughters of ski pioneers, the history of Nordic skiing, as well as reproductions of past skiing equipment and clothing to current technology. Artifacts for the exhibit have been gathered from Norway, Sweden and around the state. A highlight of the exhibit is the display of the trophy known as “The Klamath,” on loan from the Västerbottens Museum in Umeå, Sweden. Local skiing legend Emil Nordeen won the trophy in 1931 with his second win of the 42-mile Ft. Klamath to Crater Lake ski race.

The history of Nordic skiing in Oregon, Bend and Central Oregon has never been told in a comprehensive way, until now. The exhibit is made possible through generous grants from the Bend Cultural Tourism Fund, the Oregon Cultural Trust, the Oregon Nordic Ski Foundation, and many local donors and businesses. The exhibit runs through November 2016.

The Deschutes Historical Museum is, 129 NW Idaho Avenue in Bend, is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is only $5 for adults, $2 for youth 13-17, and children 12 and under are free. For more information, call 541-389-1813 or www.deschuteshistory.org.
