Participate in a scientific survey with real scientists for the day.
The Deschutes National Forest, Discover Your Forest, Sunriver Nature Center, and the High Desert Museum are sponsoring, BioBlitz, a one day event to count and name animal and plant species within Newberry National Volcanic Monument and the High Desert Museum property.
On Saturday, July 16, the public is invited as “citizen scientists” to join scientists in the fields of botany, ornithology and mammology and trained volunteers in a BioBlitz. The goal of the BioBlitz is to increase public awareness and appreciation of our local environment and to contribute to a scientific study cataloging the wide variety of plant and animal life living in the national monument and surround areas.
Participants will start at Lava Lands Visitor Center, 58201 South Highway 97, Bend, OR 97707, at one of the following three start times listed for the programs and can participate in one or all of the programs:
6:30am – 9am: Birds at High Desert Museum & Lava Lands Visitor Center
1pm – 2pm: Reptiles, Amphibians and Plants at Lava Lands Visitor Center
5pm – 7pm: Mammals and Birds at the High Desert Museum and Lava Lands Visitor Center
Participation is open to ages 10 and up, though an adult must accompany participants under 18. School groups (10 – 16 years) must have one adult leader per every 10 students. Participants are encouraged to arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled start of the survey. Survey sites include Benham Falls, Central Pumice Cone, East/Paulina Lake, Lava Butte, Lava Cast Forest and High Desert Museum.
Individuals should bring with them a backpack, good hiking shoes, hat, sunscreen, bag lunch, bug repellant, and binoculars.
