Tum-A-Lum Lumber Co., a seemingly permanent fixture on Redmond’s business landscape, announced plans to close its doors for good this September 15 as a result of increased competition, decreased market share and falling demand for construction materials during the current national recession, which has hit the building industry particularly hard.
Tum-A-Lum, founded in 1910 and located on Evergreen Avenue in downtown Redmond near Parr Lumber, which has plans of its own to move to a new facility away from the city’s core, will continue to operate its three Oregon lumber yards in Pendleton, The Dalles, and Hood River, and one in Susanville, California.
Redmond city officials say currently there are no plans for the 1.5-acre, high-visibility site, but that it should not be difficult to attract a new business to open shop at the downtown prime downtown location.
