Newberry National Volcanic Monument sites open for visitors
Lava Lands Visitor Center, Lava Butte and Lava River Cave will open to visitors this Thursday.
Beginning May 3 both sites will be open Thursday through Monday. Lava Lands Visitor Center will be open from 10am-4pm. Lava River Cave will be open from 10am-5pm; however, the site gate at Lava River Cave will close at 4pm. Summer hours will begin on May 24, and both sites will be open daily from 9am-5pm.
The road to Newberry National Volcanic Monument’s Newberry Caldera tentatively is set to open to motorized travel by Mother’s Day weekend. Interested visitors should track the up-to-date status of the opening to Newberry Caldera on Deschutes County’s website (www.deschutes.org/road ).
There may be limited access to recreation sites, boat ramps and trails upon the opening of the Caldera. Recreation fees are required where posted.
Other Monument Sites and Services Anticipated Opening Dates:
Lava Butte Shuttle Memorial Day Weekend, then daily June 16 – September 3
Lava Butte is open to passenger vehicles when Lava Lands Visitor Center is open and the shuttle is not running.
Forest Service Rd. 9720 to Lava Cast Forest Open and snow free
Paulina Visitor Center Weekends starting May 26
