The Center for Age-Friendly Excellence (CAFE) announced its partnership with St. Charles Hospital, the Council on Aging of Central Oregon, Awbrey Place and the Oregon Health and Science University, Community Research Hub to host the first regional Age-Friendly Cities summit on Friday, May 31. The Age-Friendly Cities initiative, which is backed by the World Health Organization and AARP, addresses city transformations in eight domains including housing, transportation, social participation, respect and social inclusion, civic participation and employment, communication and information, community support and health services and outdoor spaces and buildings to improve quality of life for all generations as they age.

“This conference is an opportunity for interested residents across the region to gather, organize, and learn about the Age-Friendly Cities process,” says Dr. Anabel Pelham, CAFE’s executive director and a globally-recognized leader in aging. “Attendees will also have the chance to understand the momentum already built in Central Oregon and to collaborate with community colleagues in break-out sessions for each of the domains.” Redmond and Sisters have already begun Age-Friendly programs, and Jefferson County just announced its Age-Friendly initiative.  “All this activity taking place in Central Oregon made Bend a logical place to hold the summit,” added Pelham.

The free event will take place on Friday, May 31 from 9-11:30am at the St. Charles Hospital Conference Center 2500 NE Neff Road, in Bend. Tickets are available by registering at  bit.ly/AgeFriendlyCO.  Light refreshments will be provided.
