Age Wide Open is a new, local non-profit organization designed to support adult children as they find themselves confronted with the complex needs of aging parents. Age Wide Open helps adult children navigate the process with their senior parents by offering education, connection to resources and emotional support through groups and one-on-one counseling. In conjunction with May’s Senior Awareness Month, Age Wide Open (AWO) is conducting a survey to assess adult children’s specific needs and interests. The survey is posted on the organization’s website, www.agewideopen.com, takes just a few minutes to complete and will be open for comments through June 2.
Age Wide Open’s ten-question survey investigates the biggest challenges for those who find themselves helping senior parents make decisions and trying to create a balance between competing needs for a senior’s safety and independence. For an adult child newly thrust into this situation it can be overwhelming and stressful. Age Wide Open intends to serve as a bridge to resources and services for the families of seniors. From knowing how to deal with a diagnosis of dementia or Alzheimer, to managing addiction issues, to researching housing choices, it is a large world to navigate. Even the most well-connected adults can find themselves adrift. The survey will be posted and available for comments through June 2 at the website or directly at www.surveymonkey.com/s/VQ5VP9Z.
In conjunction with Age Wide Open’s survey, the nonprofit will offer a free, community education class on Saturday, June 2 at 10:30am, at the East Bend Public Library. Entitled Lifesavers for Adult Children: Making the Aging Process Sweeter, the class is being led by AWO founder Ali Davidson, who serves as a senior advocate and is the former owner of an in-home care agency. The class is designed to help adult children in their relationships with the parents, offer skills to address challenging topics, and share information about resources for adult children and their parents. Interested people may register for the free class by emailing admin@agewideopen.com. Following the class, Age Wide Open will begin a support group that will meet regularly. Details on the free support group will be available after May 31 on the AWO website and at the class.
The surveys will be promoted through a radio campaign on KBND 1110 AM Radio, and are supported by Aspen Ridge Retirement and Memory Care, Whispering Winds Retirement and Deanna Jones, Juniper Insurance.
