(Deb Spicer)
Growing up with a twin sister, Deb Spicer, owner of Eastlake Framing, and her sister Barb spent their days loving and creating art and discussing how to bring it to life. When they were ten, their mother signed up for a correspondence course in interior design; the girls were so captivated they poured over the course content for hours on end. “I learned to trust my own sense of taste and style, my own sense of aesthetic, and my own intuition,” said Deb.
Deb’s first business, Sudden Developments, opened over 35 years ago and specialized in photo developing. She sold the business in 1992 and began her framing profession as an employee at Eastlake Art, an art supply and framing store in downtown Bend. She had found her passion and within three years she had purchased the business and renamed it Eastlake Framing. Within five years she had moved everything to its current location on Galveston Avenue.
Eastlake Framing has become a well-known name to Central Oregonians when it comes to custom framing. Deb meets with each of her clients, develops a personal connection, and gathers all the details for their project. She listens to the background on the piece, finds out where it will be displayed, and creates a framed piece of art that both complements and completes the project. The shop offers the highest-quality products, service and selection, all while providing top-of-the-line custom framing.
Deb and her team are committed to offering the latest in picture framing and custom frames and are the exclusive dealer for several products that cannot be found anywhere else in Central Oregon. They have seen a variety of items come through their shop and had the honor of creating the perfect setting for each of those pieces. They’ve framed concert posters, put together beautiful memorial collages, created custom shadow boxes for vintage belt buckles and family heirlooms, and they’ve even framed Egyptian Papyrus, which is an art form in itself. The result of custom framing is very dramatic and well worth the effort.
Beyond framing, Deb is highly skilled and well respected for her other passion — art restoration. In fact, she is one of the only art restoration specialists located in Central Oregon. And, although she loves framing and could never step away from it, Deb went back to school to learn the technique and process of oil painting and frame restoration under a master almost 15 years ago. “I fell immediately, madly, passionately in love with it. You have to be very patient and meticulous. It forces you to slow down the typical fast-paced lifestyle, almost like meditation,” Deb says. “It’s very fulfilling to watch a painting come to life under my care.” Her favorite part of the process is preserving family history. Many of the paintings she works on are either of someone’s family member or were painted by someone’s family member. “There is so much history and love in every piece,” Deb says.
