How has your business been impacted by the economic downturn?
I started Sleepy D’z right at the bottom of the downturn out of my garage. I sold inexpensive mattresses out of my garage by advertising on craigslist. Eleven furniture and mattress stores had closed within the previous two years, so I think Sleepy D’z filled a void created by the bad economy.
How have you reinvented yourselves to stay in business?
We’ve come to specialize in premium quality memory foam mattresses. Memory foam is the fastest growing segment of the bedding market. The foam products developed over the last decade are comparable in price and last far longer that the majority of innerspring products. The public also is becoming more aware of the health benefits of sleeping on high quality foam and because replacement may not be necessary, there is far less impact on our environment. We’ve also realized many of our customers live outside of our area so in 2010 we negotiated with a major shipping firm and have been shipping to our customers nationally at no extra cost.
What are your goals going forward in our present economic climate?
We’ve done nothing but grow since we started and were very optimistic about our future. We started out basically broke and have come to be known as the place to shop for memory foam. We’ve become Oregon’s number one in sales for our Easy Rest brand products and are soon to reach that mark with our Gel Tech brand.
What have been the keys to your continued success?
Knowledge, customer service and fair prices for a high quality product are the keys to Sleepy D’z success. We’ve consulted with medical professionals, athletes and sleep centers in order to understand what will be the best fit for our customers. We deliver, set up and follow up with our customers to make sure we’ve fit them with right mattress and that they’re getting the best nights sleep they’ve ever had without having to spend their life savings. Most of our mattresses sell for around $1,000 and none are over $2,000.
