The ABCs of Cybersecurity

In partnership with the Oregon Small Business Development Center.

Tuesday, January 25 | 10:30am-12pm
Free to Attend
Open to both Technology Association of Oregon (TAO) members and non-members and all job titles and functions.

Every industry has jargon and acronyms that can be confusing and overwhelming. The abbreviations and acronyms are so prolific in information security that a 2007 book by Alan Calder and Steve J. Watkins contained 104 pages of them. In the intervening 15 years, the number of acronyms has become downright dizzying.

Are you worried about a BEC threat? Is your IPS working? Should you consider a DLP solution? Or are you just shaking your head? If you can only answer the last question, the first session of the 2022 Cyber Series is for you.

FBI Special Agent Phil R. Slinkard will spend an hour and a half kicking off the year by explaining the basics, like how to avoid a business email compromise (BEC) threat, is your intrusion prevention system (IPS) working and do you need a data loss prevention (DLP) solution? Special Agent Slinkard will also cover the most pressing cyber threats of 2022 while providing tips on how to keep your customers, employees and businesses safe.

Please join the Small Business Development Center, Mount Hood Community College and the Technology Association of Oregon (TAO) as we kick off the 2022 Cyber Series with an extended 1.5 hour session. Then join us on the 4th Tuesday of the month from February through September to learn the fundamentals of cybercrime and cybersecurity to better protect your business.

Future Focused: A Conversation with Women Leaders in Tech

Women have always played an important role in the technology industry, unearthing new discoveries and developing unique approaches to solving the world’s challenges through innovation. However, there is still a long way to go before the playing field is truly level, and women are hired and promoted based on their skills and the exceptional contributions they make to the industry.

Vital to technological advancement, women bring unique perspectives, backgrounds and knowledge to the table. However, women are currently outnumbered by men 3:1 in the tech industry and 5:1 in engineering.

Technology Association of Oregon and partner UK Trade and Investment invite you to a conversation with regional female leaders hosted by Tammy Sandhu, British Deputy Consul General, about what is needed to support female, non-binary and other historically excluded individuals in technology roles (particularly in leadership).

This all-female panel brings their passion for lifting up women to more senior roles, workplace equality for intersectional diversity (including sexuality and race in addition to gender) and supportive workplace culture. They will discuss how to have the confidence to confront inequality in pay, and how to be an advocate for building a diverse and inclusive workforce in the tech sector.
