October 6 – 12 is National Fire Prevention Week and the Bend Fire Department is celebrating with an Open House event. Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871.
This year’s national theme “Prevent Kitchen Fires” effectively serves to remind us to stay alert and use caution when cooking to reduce the risk of kitchen fires.
On Saturday, October 12 from 11am until 3:30pm, the public is invited to visit Bend North fire station at 63377 Jamison Street. There will be fun, FREE activities for the whole family!
Meet firefighters Tour the fire station and climb aboard a fire engine.Watch a Vehicle Extrication with the Jaws of Life. Live Burn Demonstration to show what NOT to do in case of a grease fire on your stovetop and the benefits of residential fire sprinklers.Free CPR classes and blood pressure checks. Take your picture at the Children’s Firefighter Photo booth and craft activities.Build your very own fire truck with friends from the Home Depot. Plus, scoops of Eberhards Ice Cream, cookies and refreshments. The entire event is FREE!
