The Central Oregon Association of REALTORS (COAR) hosted its annual Building a Better Central Oregon (BBCO) awards Thursday, October 24, recognizing outstanding new, influential and innovative construction and improvements to residential and commercial structures. A packed house of local real estate and building-related professionals attended the event, which was held at the Broken Top Clubhouse.

Each year COAR recognizes the efforts of citizens to enhance the beauty and vitality of their communities, based on nominations from its members, as well as property owners, architects, developers and others in the real estate business. An awards committee begins reviewing nominations each August, with awards given in the fall.

The Central Oregon Association of REALTORS advocates for the local real estate industry and for property owners. It is the hub of real estate information, communications, training and other resources that support our real estate economic base.

Madras City Hall & Police Station Wins Award
The new Madras City Hall & Police Station won a 2013 Building a Better Central Oregon Award in the public project category at the awards event. The Central Oregon Association of Realtors forms a committee that reviews and selects construction and renovation projects that enhance the beauty and vitality of Central Oregon.

“We’re so pleased that the Madras City Hall & Police Station was recognized as an outstanding community project because the citizens of Jefferson County deserve a quality facility to serve them; one that is representative of their community pride and aspirations,” said Scott Steele, president, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP of Steele Associates Architects LLC.

Steele explained the design, “The public plaza was designed for multipurpose community events and gatherings and to enhance both the existing Veteran’s Memorials and the Tommy Tucker Memorial. The plaza surface is highlighted by a diagrammatic design of the Deschutes, Metolius and Crooked rivers whose confluence is so important to the community.

You can actually stroll on “rivers” whose path and orientation are geographically correct, and the west edge of the plaza is studded with large character boulders representing our Cascade peaks.“The exterior features exposed concrete piers whose tapered sides and horizontal board form texture is reminiscent of the tuff stone and slopes of the Cove Palisades.

The vision was to create an outdoor gathering space and City Hall / Police Station that was highly energy efficient and which exudes the unique quality and character of the Jefferson County community.”

Project Team includes: Steele Associates Architects master planning, architecture, interiors; Interface Engineering, mechanical and electrical engineering; Froelich Consulting Engineers, structural engineering; Hickman Williams Associates, civil engineering and CS Construction, builder.
