RootedHomes’ Native Plant Harvest Event

0

RootedHomes invites the community to participate in its Native Plant Harvest event on September 15 from 12-5pm. Hosted at 19755 Simpson Avenue, at the corner of Simpson Ave. and SW 18th Ave., the RootedHomes event will harvest native plants and adolescent trees on the site of its future affordable housing development — Rooted at Simpson. As part of RootedHomes’ commitment to sustainability, the event will save a significant number of native plants and adolescent trees to be replanted on the site when the affordable housing community is completed. Additional harvested plants and trees, including ponderosas, bitterbrush, rabbitbrush, sulfur buckwheat, yarrow, and fescue, will be available as a gift to volunteers.

“RootedHomes is committed to the environmental sustainability of its affordable homeownership communities and its entire development process,” shared Jackie Keogh, executive director at RootedHomes. “Repurposing native plants and trees on the site is the first of many sustainability practices that will be incorporated into the development of Rooted at Simson.”

RootedHomes is seeking volunteer groups or individuals to support the event by volunteering their time to harvest plants. Volunteers should wear appropriate footwear and clothing for landscaping, with gloves recommended. While limited shovels, pots, and wheelbarrows will be available, volunteers are encouraged to bring their own. Interested volunteers can contact Tess Freeman at tess@rootedhomes.org and are asked to register here: rootedhomes.org/events/events/native-plant-harvest-event/113
