According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control’s annual Youth Risk Behavior Survey, the trend of American teens drinking less continued into 2023. Oregon students return to school this month with this welcome news for parents and teachers.
The survey showed only 22% of high school students reported any drinking in the past 30 days in 2023, that’s down from 35% a decade earlier in 2013. The CDC survey mirrors another federally backed study, the National Institutes of Health’s Monitoring the Future survey, which earlier this year found 55% of college students reported any past-month drinking and less than 22% reported binge drinking — both record lows.
The Youth Risk Behavior Survey Data Summary and Trends Report provides data on health behaviors and experiences of high school students in the United States. The data highlights students’ behaviors and experiences in 2023, changes from 2021 to 2023, and ten-year trends on substance use, sexual behavior, mental health and other issues.
