Composting offers numerous benefits, including enriching soil, water retention, less reliance on fertilizers, and ultimately reducing waste and methane emissions from landfills.
Deschutes Recycling, located at Knott Landfill in Bend, recycles local yard trimmings and food scraps, producing a nutrient rich compost. Compost can be used as a soil amendment and lawn top dressing.
Commercial businesses within the City of Bend, Redmond, and Sisters that produce food waste can sign up to compost food waste and help divert material from the landfill. All food waste, including meat, dairy, produce, and bakery can be composted. Businesses and residents can contact their local garbage and recycling service provider for more information about organic collection programs.
