From Kindergarten to Retirement: Prineville’s IronHorse Neighborhood

Changes are happening at IronHorse, Prineville’s first master-planned neighborhood which is being developed by long-time Central Oregon real estate company, Brooks Resources.

Last year has brought many exciting opportunities and growth to IronHorse. Truly a community for all ages, the neighborhood is excited to welcome two new “tenants” to its fold. This coming fall, a new neighborhood school, Barnes Butte Elementary, will open for students in Crook County.

Last fall, IronHorse Lodge announced that it will begin construction on 26 new apartments for seniors.

IronHorse Lodge will provide much-needed affordable housing for seniors in the region. It is being developed by Pacific Crest Affordable Housing LLC, a long-time Central Oregon company that has completed similar projects in Bend and LaPine, including the Discovery Park Lodge in NorthWest Crossing.

Originally planned as a 52-unit senior affordable housing facility, the developer received funding for 26-units and will consider developing the remaining 26 based on additional funding and need within the community. An interesting feature of the project is the planned installation of a 67.2-kilowatt solar project on two carport structures designed specifically to host the solar panels. Construction is planned to begin later this year.

Another addition to the community is Barnes Butte Elementary. Located inside IronHorse, this brand-new school is quickly taking shape and the new principal has been leading tours for community members inside the construction zone. The school, which will open in the fall for elementary aged children in Crook County, will have the capacity for 700 students. The school was developed around a pod concept, where groups of five classrooms are built around a common area. The school will be approximately 70,000 square feet.

Traffic access to the new school has been accomplished through a new entrance into IronHorse on Combs Flat Road. Now the main entrance to the neighborhood, the extension of this important corridor was completed by the project developer, Brooks Resources, last year and is being maintained by the City of Prineville. Visitors will see new signage and landscaping taking place at this entrance over the next few weeks.

Recreational enthusiasts continue to enjoy the spectacular IronHorse trail system, which runs up Barnes Butte and leads to public lands. The full loop is about four miles long, and is the site of popular community races such as the Prineville Memorial Hotshots Run and the Crook County Track & Field Fund Run. The trail’s natural terrain makes a pleasant environment for casual hikers all the way to trail runners.

Hikers can see 360 degree views of the surrounding high desert landscape from the trails, plus gain access to Barnes Butte and surrounding public lands. A full map of the trail system can be found on the neighborhood’s website.

Gaining easy access to all these wonderful amenities is easy. IronHorse has several homesites for sale ranging from $29,000-$55,000 that are perfect for building a custom home. In addition, several new spec homes are available through MLS.

IronHorse is a sustainable community with all homes built to Earth Advantage standards for energy and resource efficiency all the way to indoor air quality. With sweeping views of the breath-taking landscape, plus proximity to all the region’s recreational options, IronHorse is in the heart of Central Oregon.
