On July 4 students and staff members from Universities in Kazakhstan and Ukraine will arrive in Bend to spend four days visiting businesses, non-profits and local educators to discuss effective leadership and business theory in the 21st Century.
Students from the two Universities represent Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Nigeria and Afghanistan. The students’ United States visit concludes a year long, intensive leadership program based on the principals of servant leadership. The course included classroom study, writing exercises and an intensive nine-month mentoring experience via the internet with leaders in Bend and Portland.
Organized by Co-Serve International with support from the Deschutes Economic Alliance (DEA) the students and staff will be studying on-site business and leadership practices and principles from local businesses and non-profit organizations. The following schedule shows activities and times:
1. Thursday, July 4 —12-4pm— Arrival and welcome to Bend, BBQ with introduction to host families. Sunrise Village Lodge and then to host family homes.
2. Friday, July 5 —Morning session: Leadership discussions and site visit to Healing Reins Therapeutic Riding Center a Non-Profit business. Afternoon session-leadership discussions and presentation with Sandi Greene-CEO-N-link-location DEA office.
3. Saturday, July 6—Morning session—Group meeting location and move to Savory Spice Shop in Old Mill District for presentation by Matt Perry on “Servant Leadership in Action.” Go back to group meeting location for Freedom Writers presentation work. Afternoon from 1:30pm on devoted personal time and host families.
4. Sunday, July 7 —Day devoted to exploring Bend with host families.
5. Monday, July 8 —Morning session leadership work and visit and lunch at Bend Research. Afternoon session American Licorice visit and Servant Leadership case study. Evening session at 5:30pm with dinner and Student Presentation on their visit and leadership philosophies.
6. Tuesday, July 9—Depart Bend for Washington State visit to employee owned business and then travel to Portland for more visits and graduation at Marylhurst College on July 19.
This is the second year that Co-Serve (http://www.co-serve.org) students and staff have come to Bend to study Servant Leadership concepts with local educators and businesses. In February 2013 University Presidents from Kazakhstan and Ukraine Universities visited Bend to study the COCC Culinary Institute Programs and meet with local business leaders.
