Melbourne is surrounded by stunning nature and wildlife, if you’re planning a trip to Melbourne you should definitely set aside a day or two to go and explore what’s on offer. In this article I’m going to cover some of the best picks ranging from hikes that are close to the city, to road trips that will require a whole day.
Great Ocean Road and 12 Apostles
I used to think that the 12 Apostles were over-rated, until I saw them. They are breath taking and a sight to marvel at. However, to really enjoy this option you need a car and at least a full day so you can take things at your own pace and stop at the many options along the route, I recommend also visiting:
- London Bridge
- The Arch
- Teddy’s Lookout
- The Gables Lookout
There are also some amazing walks and hikes in the area, such as Maits Rest Rainforest Walk and Melba Gully State Park. One of the things I love the most about these walks is that it feels as though you’re in a Jurassic world where nature is completely untouched.
Dandenong Ranges National Park
It’s located just 39km from Melbourne and it’s a natural paradise. It comprises of 5 main areas; Doongalla Forest, Ferntree Gully, Sherbrooke Forest, Olinda Forest, and Mt Evelyn Forest. All of which offer a variety of hikes which will often take you past a lake or a waterfall. It’s the best option if you want to get out of town for a bit, have a picnic and enjoy nature. If you have kids, consider the Puffing Billy Rail train, it’ll be a hit.
St Kilda
Not exactly part of Melbourne’s surrounding nature as it’s quite central. But it’s worth a mention as it has a great beach and if you walk to the end of the pier you can witness some of Melbourne’s famous Little Penguins, they are the smallest of their species and absolutely adorable.
Phillip Island
Phillip Island is a great day trip from Melbourne and has a variety of appealing attractions. One of its most famous attractions is the Penguin Parade, every evening at sunset hundreds of Little Penguins return home after a long day fishing, you can watch them waddle up the beach and make their way back to their nest. Also, worth noting at Phillip Island is the Koala Reserve, The Nobbies, and The Whale Discovery Trail.
Grampians National Park
This large national park is about 3 hours drive from Melbourne but it’s worth it! It’s famous for its prominent mountain ridges and its variety of hikes and walks. You can do it in a day, but if you have the time than there’s plenty to do over 2 or even 3 days. The walks range from easy strolls to full day hikes. This is the ultimate destination for someone looking for an outdoor adventure.
Hanging Rock Trail
This is a beautiful walk and although it doesn’t take long to complete it I’d suggest planning in an extra hour to explore the Hanging Rock at the top. It’s a great spot to have a BBQ with free facilities provided. It’s worth noting, this is quite a popular destination so if you want to avoid the crowds try planning it in during the week.
Organ Pipes National Park
The Organ Pipes are a set of basalt columns that have formed into quite a spectacular sight. It’s a short but steep hike and once you’ve arrived you’ll also be rewarded with some great views of Jacksons Creek and the Park. It’s suitable with children and also a great spot for a picnic.
