WHAT: The second-annual placement of duck nesting tubes in the Old Mill District to give wild mallard hens a safe place to lay their eggs in spring. The goal of this project is to enhance habitat and mallard clutch success rates along the Deschutes River, away from increasing threats from predators such as skunks and raccoons. The team will be cleaning previously installed tubes and checking them for egg fragments to determine project success. They will also be installing new tubes where needed.
WHO: A partnership of experts from Bend Ducks Unlimited, volunteers from the Mountain View High School Future Farmers of America chapter and the Old Mill District. Mountain View High School metal shop students participated by creating the nesting tubes for installation.
WHEN: Monday, February 17, noon-3pm
WHERE: The team will meet in the Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe Parking lot at the Old Mill, 805 SW Industrial Way, Bend OR 97702 just before noon. They will be working during the early afternoon in the wetlands between Old Mill District Footbridge and Miller’s Landing.
