From June 17-20 the Deschutes County Fairgrounds will host the Far West Championship Horse Show featuring lots of great horses and riders at this event.
This year’s show includes American Saddlebreds, Hackney Ponies, Friesians, Roadsters, Andalusians, Welsh Ponies, carriage driving, dressage, opportunity western dressage, trail, academy, working equitation and an all-breed opportunity classes.
According to Doug Cross, president of the Northwest Saddlebred Association. the American Saddlebred Registry is the oldest breed registry in United States. Mostly known as the Peacock of the show ring, The Saddlebred is shown in classes for three- and five-gaited horses, Fine Harness, hunter country pleasure, western pleasure, and pleasure driving classes.
In five-gaited classes, they are shown with a full tail and a full mane. Three-gaited horses are shown with a shaved or “roached” mane to accentuate the refinement of the horse.
In addition to breed shows, the Saddlebred is used for competitive trail riding, endurance riding, dressage, combined driving, eventing and show jumping. Some Saddlebreds are suitable for cutting and roping. They are also suitable family horses used for trail and pleasure riding and ranch work.
Famous Saddlebreds include General Lee’s Traveller, General Grant’s Cincinnati, Mr. Ed., Flicka, Fury and a movie version of Black Beauty.
Hayley Pullen will be one of the featured riders competing at the Horse Show. Hayley is a member of the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) Young Riders Team and later this year will be part of the team representing the U.S. in competition in South Africa.
The US Saddle Seat Equitation Young Riders Teams were created by USEF with the purpose to develop riders for future Saddle Seat World Cup competitions. During years that the Saddle Seat World Cup competition is not held, members of the Young Riders Teams will be eligible to represent the United States in other international competitions. Each team will be made up of six riders in both the three- and five-gaited sections. Any five of the six riders will compete.
