Regardless of the weather, there will be plenty to do at the High Desert Museum during spring break. The museum will feature its seasonal Skyhunters birds of prey show, day camps and a special Kids Day on Wednesday, March 25. The week is also the last chance to see the traveling exhibit Out on a Limb, which closes March 29. Out on a Limb is a nature-inspired exhibit created by the Children’s Discovery Museum in San Jose, California.
Skyhunters is an indoor flight show featuring some of the museum’s resident raptors, including a hawk, vulture and falcon. There will be two shows daily at 11:00am and 1:30pm. The cost is $3 for members and $5 for non-members (plus museum admission for non-members).
Kids Day, inspired by the new exhibit Deadly by Nature: Venom and Poison, is filled with special programs and activities just for kids. They’ll have fun while learning about how plants and animals have adapted to use venom and poison for self-preservation. The exhibit features a collection of living venomous creatures such as a lionfish, a bearded dragon lizard and Asian vine snake. Kids Day is made possible by Oregon College Savings Plan with support from Wells Fargo.
The museum also is offering three spring break day camps for kids from the ages of five through 10. Two of the camps, Out on a Limb for ages five and six and Eureka! for ages seven and eight are full but there’s still space in Camping Cookout for nine- and 10-year-olds. This camp is a hands-on culinary adventure where kids learn not only how to cook over an open flame but the science behind old-time cooking methods. Camps are from 9:00am to 3:00pm March 23 through 27, with optional extended care available. The cost is $160 for members, $185 for non-members. Pre-registration is required. http://highdesertmuseum.org/spring-break-kids-camp
For the grown-ups, there’s no shortage of exhibits to explore, including Brewing Culture: The Craft of Beer. Learn about the history of brewing on the High Desert and the process. The museum is extending its hours during spring break to 10:00am – 5:00pm from Saturday, March 21 through Sunday, March 29.
