EDCO Leads Exploration of Local Industry
The Made in Bend Tour offered a rare opportunity to go behind the scenes of some of Bend’s most impactful businesses that are shaping the region’s economic future. Attendees began the day with welcoming remarks and formed small tour groups. From there, shuttles transported groups to each participating business. At each stop, company leaders provided insight into their operations, covering supply chains, manufacturing processes, workforce strategies and growth trajectories. The day started with a breakfast and an economic development update from the nonprofit EDCO (Economic Development of Central Oregon), providing context for the tour and a broader look at regional trends.
“The Made in Bend Tour is a unique, behind-the-scenes look at the businesses that power our local economy and create jobs in Central Oregon,” said a representative of EDCO. “It’s a chance to connect the dots between the thriving traded sector and the products that many residents may not even realize are made right here in Bend.”
The stops on this year’s tour include Broken Top Brands, Thuren Fabrication, CertainTeed, and Powers of Automation; each stop showcased both B2B and B2C strategies and provided testament to the entrepreneurial spirit that defines our region, given that each was founded right here in Bend.
“The tour is less about solving a business puzzle and more about celebrating success, walking through the doors of companies that are shaping our economic future while enjoying a beautiful day exploring our city.” said the representative from EDCO.
Broken Top Brands is a consumer goods company creating natural home and body products. Founder Affton Coffelt discussed how returning to their original sales strategy helped spark renewed performance.
Thuren Fabrication specializes in suspension systems and off-road parts for trucks. Founder Don Thuren discussed his recent expansion from a niche product line to meet broader needs of outdoor and automotive enthusiasts.
CertainTeed is a building materials manufacturer focused on wall corners, with deep roots in Bend. Plant Manager Eric Bewley was with Structus before it was acquired by CertainTeed Saint Gobain, a multinational company, and brought long-standing expertise to the operation.
Powers of Automation builds automation, calibration, and validation systems used across local industries. General Manager Eric Parkes staged some demonstrations of their technology.
By the end of the day, visitors often leave with a deeper appreciation for the innovation and craftsmanship that exists in our own backyard—and maybe even some surprise at just how much is Made in Bend.
“This tour is important because it opens our eyes to the incredible innovation happening right here in Bend,” said Don Myll, area director for EDCO. “It’s a chance to celebrate local companies that are creating jobs, driving our economy, and putting Central Oregon on the map.”
