A new scholarship established by OnPoint Community Credit Union will award $4,000 to one University of Oregon student each year who is pursuing a career in commercial banking at the Lundquist College of Business. The OnPoint Community Credit Union Scholarship will support undergraduate students with financial needs who have an interest in a career in banking.

OnPoint’s scholarship reduces financial barriers and empowers the next generation of banking industry leaders as tuition costs rise across the country. The inaugural scholarship recipient was selected in May 2024, and the student will receive the $4,000 award toward their tuition over the course of the 2024-2025 academic year.

“We are thrilled to partner with the University of Oregon to provide this opportunity, which not only provides critical financial support but also paves the way for the next generation of banking professionals,” said Bob Harding, senior vice president and chief commercial officer at OnPoint Community Credit Union. “By investing in these talented students, we are fueling their future success and strengthening the broader community as they bring their expertise, passion and innovation to the commercial banking sector.”

The scholarship application for the 2025-2026 school year will open on December 1, 2024, and close on February 28, 2025, and the University of Oregon Lundquist College of Business will oversee the application and selection process. The recipient will be selected based on: financial need and the student’s interest in pursuing a career in banking. The application process includes a personal statement and resume, and is reviewed by a committee of Lundquist faculty and staff.

The scholarship will continue year after year, offering opportunities to new students who are pursuing careers in banking.

“This is the first dedicated scholarship for commercial banking at the university, and we hope it will encourage more students to pursue this exciting career path,” said Bob Brothers, director of development at the Lundquist College of Business, University of Oregon. “We are grateful for OnPoint’s support, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact this scholarship will have on our students and the banking community.”

This new scholarship aligns with an increased focus on commercial banking programming from the Lundquist College of Business. The university’s commercial banking course has seen tremendous growth in recent years, with enrollment doubling since 2020. The course offers seniors and graduate-level students hands-on training in critical financial skills such as risk analysis, loan structuring and ethical responsibilities. Students also gain access to networking opportunities with industry executives from federal and local financial institutions. It is taught by Roger Busse, a 45-year banking industry veteran. Busse was the former chief executive officer of Pacific Continental Bank and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) community bank advisory council member in Washington, D.C.
