Newport Avenue Landscaping has begun deploying robotic mowers at the Bend RV Resort as part of a push toward sustainable, battery-powered landscaping solutions.
The move reflects a broader effort to reduce noise, emissions, and turf damage at high-traffic properties, starting with one of Central Oregon’s most visible hospitality sites. The new mowing system uses commercial-grade Kress robotic mowers, which are battery powered and dispatched each night to cut a thin layer of grass across designated areas of the resort.
“Our goal with this project isn’t to save money right away,” said Sterling West, owner of Newport Avenue Landscaping. “It’s about long-term sustainability, reducing the carbon footprint, and improving the guest experience at places like the Bend RV Resort.”
Unlike traditional mowing, the robotic mowers cut frequently and finely, eliminating the need for aeration or thatching. Over time, this promotes healthier turf while keeping the resort noticeably quieter — especially important for guests staying in close proximity to open lawns.
Each unit is monitored and maintained by trained robotic mowing technicians on Newport’s staff. While the initial rollout requires a period of calibration, especially around irrigation windows and foot traffic patterns, the system will eventually allow Newport to scale back on traditional mowing services at the resort, leading to cost reductions down the line.
“This is something we see as the future of commercial grounds maintenance,” said West. “Battery powered, quiet, and consistent. We’re proud to help the Bend RV Resort lead the way.”
Newport Avenue Landscaping expects the first two years of the program to focus on refinement and training, with reduced maintenance rates phased in as robotic mowing becomes fully dialed in. For now, it’s another step forward in rethinking what outdoor care looks like in Central Oregon.
