City of Redmond Hosts Art Deco Moderne Building Tour

0

Did you know that the City of Redmond boasts a large collection of existing Art Deco Moderne Buildings? Moderne Architecture, sometimes called Style Moderne, is a generalized term for common styles of architecture built in America from 1925 through the 1940s. On Saturday, September 15, the Redmond Historic Landmarks Commission will be hosting tours of the buildings.

Some have been recently restored, like the Redmond’s current City Hall building which was originally a 1940 Safeway building, some need a little bit of tender loving care, such as the Patrick Building, a 1941 structure that originally was built as a medical clinic, and some have seen little or no change over the years, such as the 1939 Chadwick Building. All are located in the city’s downtown area, and the Redmond Historic Landmarks Commission working in partnership with the Redmond Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Program developed a walking tour brochure highlighting these buildings, explaining the architectural style and the history of the movement in Redmond.

On Saturday, September 15, 2012, the Redmond Historic Landmarks Commission will be hosting tours of the buildings, starting at 9-11am and brochures will be available for self-guided tours. Tours will begin at the 7th Street Plaza between Deschutes and Evergreen Avenue across from Centennial Park. For more information, please contact Jaclyn Abslag at 541-923-7763.
