On January 1, 2018 Summit Health Management’s (SHM) partnership with Bend Memorial Clinic of Oregon (BMC) was completed to form Summit Medical Group of Oregon — Bend Memorial Clinic.
BMC first began seeking out a partnership in 2016 while facing financial challenges. The clinic received over 30 offers from hospitals systems and private equity groups.
New Jersey based SHM is expanding their patient care and physician group management model with partnerships in Oregon and Arizona. The partnership with BMC brings SHM’s administrative, clinical and financial management services to the largest independent multi-specialty physician group in the region.
“We are delighted that Bend Memorial Clinic has chosen to partner with us to retain their physician-owned and governed structures and patient-centric philosophy,” said Dr. Jeffrey Le Benger, chairman and chief executive officer of Summit Health Management. “We’ll help them thrive and expand by sharing our resources and expertise in population health management and other emerging value-based care models.”
SHM will provide BMC with comprehensive administrative, clinical and financial management services. From a patient experience perspective, Central Oregonians will receive care from the same physicians and staff at the same locations currently in place.
“This is an important milestone in the long and distinguished history of BMC that will ensure the strength and vitality of our physician-owned and governed medical group,” said Dr. David Holloway, chief executive officer of Bend Memorial Clinic.
Bend Memorial Clinic has served the Central Oregon medical community for 71 years with 120 health care providers, 30 specialties and state-of-the-art medical technologies. The partnership provides BMC with SHM’s proprietary patient care and practice management model.
“Summit Health Management and BMC are cut from the same cloth with shared values,” said Russell Massine, MD, chief governance officer of Bend Memorial Clinic. “We are committed to ensuring that there is no interruption in the high quality care our patients receive and delivering on our brand commitment of providing patients the Total Care they expect and deserve.”
The partnership between SHM and BMC is mutually beneficial and will enhance the services available to Central Oregon residents with both sides equally invested in addressing the emerging needs of a growing population.
“As Summit Medical Group Oregon — BMC, we will offer enhanced services, including more primary care providers and expanded oncology services to the Bend community. We will continue to deliver on our commitment of providing patients comprehensive Total Care,” said Holloway.
SMC’s model is predominantly value-based meaning that physicians are paid based on patient health outcomes rather than the number of patients they see or the services provided. SMC officials aim to help BMC doctors become more efficient and productive giving them more time to spend with patients. Plans to hire new family medicine, internal medicine, dermatology and obstetrics-gynecology specialists will improve the care patients receive.
Summit Health Management was founded in 2014 by physicians for physicians and provides an innovative alternative to traditional options for the integration of multi-specialty group practice and the delivery of value-based care.
