Experts from around Oregon will meet in Deschutes County on October 14 to join with Central Oregon leaders to develop an Action Plan to combat the epidemic of prescription drug abuse. The Summit will feature leading authorities from around Oregon on safe prescribing practices, alternative pain management, opioid abuse treatment, and disposal of unused meds.

The Central Oregon Health Council and Lines for Life are teaming up to plan the Summit, which is being sponsored by Deschutes County, the Central Oregon Health Council (COHC), PacificSource Community Solutions, St. Charles Health Systems, WEBCO, the Governor’s Office, the Oregon Health Authority (OHA), and Lines for Life’s Oregon Coalition for Responsible Use of Meds.
Health professionals, hospital systems, treatment and prevention professionals, law enforcement, third party payers, educators, and business community are critical players and should plan to attend this important event.
“Non-medical use of prescription opiates is the fastest growing drug abuse problem facing Central Oregon,” said Deschutes County Commissioner Tammy Baney. “Through this Summit, we will educate and bring awareness to the crisis we are facing; we will address prescribing practices with our medical community and ultimately bring our community together to address this epidemic.”
“We prescribe 100 million opioid pills every twelve months in Oregon – and we see the results, with more deaths from prescription drug abuse than car wrecks,” said Lines for Life’s CEO Dwight Holton.
“We can lick this together – this Summit is an important step.”
The summit will be held on October 14 from 8:30am to – 4:30pm at the Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center in Redmond in the Middle Sister Conference hall. To encourage health care professionals to attend, this activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint partnership of St. Charles Health System and the Central Oregon Health Council. St. Charles Health System is accredited by the Oregon Medical Association to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
