Leading Edge Aviation (LEA), a helicopter and fixed wing flight school in Bend, Oregon, has been training student pilots since 2006 under FAA part 141 and 61. With a management team of aviators who have ties throughout the industry, LEA continuously institutes top notch strategies to produce the most professional pilots in the field.
LEA is proud to announce the immediate implementation of Scenario Based Training (SBT) into their instructional standards for all pilot ratings (Private – CFII) including advanced training courses (Night Vision Goggle, Mountain, and Long Line). SBT allows pilots in training to take on the pilot in command mindset from day one.
When an incident occurs in the aviation industry as a result of pilot error, the most common question that rises is ‘What was the pilot thinking?’ With SBT, Leading Edge equips their pilots in training to think and respond to real world scenarios, within a safe and timely manner. –Karl Cotton, Helicopter Chief Flight Instructor, LEA
LEA implemented SBT instruction strategy to ensure that their students are safety oriented and properly prepared for the real world flying scenarios they will encounter as they enter the industry. While Scenario Based Training has been a major advancement in the Flight Training world, LEA has still recognized a deficit in regards to student engagement in their training progression.
Regretfully, while developing in many other avenues, the aviation industry as a whole is lacking advancement in the extremely important realm of record keeping. While there is no harm in logging hours and progress by hand, Leading Edge Aviation has identified the need to advance, and implement technology into the flight training world in order to better meet student needs, and keep them up to speed regarding their progression through the program.
LEA has integrated the use of a web based student tracking system, Flight Record (www.flightrecord.io), into their flight school record keeping agenda. Flight Record is a database intended to push flight schools into the digital world. Flight Record allows instructors to more accurately record their students’ progress towards ratings, and allows student pilots to have a more in depth involvement in their training. Flight Record lists the requirements of each rating, and numerically measures the student’s progress in each specified area. Students are now able to log-in to their training account, and have a visual measurement of where they stand in the program. With the integration of this program, Leading Edge has seen a boost in student engagement, and a higher rate of satisfaction with curriculum.
In order to ensure that students have proper access to this new program, Leading Edge has also made the commitment to give all of their pilots in training, who have completed their private rating, an IPad. The use of the IPad will give students access to their training records, and allow them to utilize all other technological advancements throughout the training industry.
Leading Edge Aviation has been part of the Bend community since 1989 and has 5 major business segments including helicopter charter, flight training, avionics, maintenance and Robinson Helicopter overhaul. LEA is an FAA Part 135 Air Carrier operating Robinson R22, R44, and Bell 206 helicopters. LEA is a certified Robinson Helicopter sales, service maintenance and overhaul facility and authorized distributors for most major avionics manufacturers.
