Google celebrated the opening of its new data center with employees and their families and community members last week. To date, Google has invested $1.2 billion in The Dalles and provided over 80 full-time jobs. The company paid $1.2 million in up-front fees to the City and County in 2013 as part of the latest expansion and will pay $800,000 each year the agreement is in effect.
“We are excited to celebrate our new building,” said Dave Karlson, Google operations manager. “We are proud to call The Dalles and Oregon our home and to have significantly grown our presence here over the last 10 years.”
“Oregon is a great place for our best tech companies to invest in data centers, and I’m thrilled that a world leader like Google continues to do so. The size of their investment in the Dalles data center demonstrates a long term commitment to rural Oregon’s families and the communities they live in,” said Oregon Governor Kate Brown.
At the celebration, Google will announce its latest grant of nearly $100,000 for computer science education in Wasco County Schools. Since 2008, the company has awarded more than $8.6 million in grants to Oregon schools and nonprofits, including over $200,000 previously to Wasco County School District #21, over $366,000 for a free WiFi network in The Dalles, and grants to numerous other STEM education and energy efficiency projects and programs.
Google’s data centers are some of the most efficient in the world, using 50 percent less energy than the typical data center. Google is the first major Internet services company to gain external certification of the high environmental, workplace safety, and energy management standards of its data centers.
“Google can build data centers anywhere in the world and I am proud they chose to expand in The Dalles. We have the right land, energy infrastructure, and workforce to support their expansion,” said Steve Lawrence, Mayor of The Dalles. “In turn, they have provided quality jobs and make annual payments we can put toward the community.”
