Oregon State University awarded its most prestigious academic scholarship to two students from Bend.
Magnus L’Argent of Bend Senior High School and Zoe Morrison of Summit High School will receive the Presidential Scholarship, which provides up to $40,000 in funding for undergraduate studies.
The scholarship is for $10,000 per year, renewable for up to a total of four years. Only 36 students entering Oregon State in the fall of 2019 will receive the scholarship.
“As the number of high-achieving Oregon residents seeking admission to Oregon State continues to grow, the candidates who are eligible for the Presidential Scholarship become more impressive each year,” said Colleen Conniff, director of scholarships at Oregon State. “The selection committee reviews each application carefully to select students who will engage with the many opportunities available here and actively contribute to the OSU community. OSU is excited to recognize these talented students and support them in achieving their educational goals.”
OSU Office of Admissions staff visit Oregon high schools to deliver Beaver Boxes filled with Oregon State swag to scholarship recipients. These presentations are usually a surprise to the recipient and have included parents, school administrators, classroom visits and even the school band paying tribute to the student.
To be considered for the Presidential Scholarship, students must be current Oregon high school seniors; considered an Oregon resident at the time of application for admission; have a minimum 3.85 unweighted high school GPA; and have a minimum score of 1360 on the SAT or 29 on the ACT.
In addition, applicants are evaluated on their admissions application and supplemental questions in the following areas: the student’s uniqueness and individual contribution; the student’s accomplishments, experiences and talents; the student’s achievements within the context of their social and personal circumstances; and the student’s participation in activities that develop academic, intellectual and leadership abilities.
For fall of 2019, 793 students met the minimum qualifications for the Presidential Scholarship. Among those selected as award recipients, the average unweighted high school GPA was 3.99, and the average SAT score was 1520 (with 1600 being a perfect score).
