Runners are encouraged to register now for the Central Oregon Shrine Club’s third annual Shriners Run for a Child 5K Run/Walk and new this year, 10K, which serve as fundraisers for Shriners Hospitals for Children Portland.

Set for Sunday, August 9 at 9am in Bend’s Old Mill District at Riverbend Park, this year’s event will feature the 5K and 10K at 9am, a post-race barbeque and multiple prize drawings for participants, a silent auction, family activities including a children’s water obstacle course, as well as vendor and sponsor booths.

Registration for the 5K event is $25, the 10K is $35, and can be made online at shrinersrunforachild.com. Representatives from the Shriners Hospitals for Children Portland will be on hand to answer questions. Annually, over 100 children from the tri-county area of Deschutes, Crook and Jefferson counties received life-altering treatment at Shriners Hospitals for Children, regardless of the family’s ability to pay.

In 2013, the Central Oregon Shrine Club (COSC) set out to increase awareness of Shriners Hospitals through an annual fundraiser and a Shriners Sunday was conceived, in which families could participate in a run/walk for this great cause and enjoy a barbeque meal hosted by local Shriners.

This year Macy Kaufman and Zachary Henneous are serving as our 2015 Race Marshals. Kaufman is a freshman at Summit High School who underwent a lengthy spinal surgery to correct her scoliosis at Shriner’s Hospital in July 2013. Without this life changing surgery, her future mobility may have been questionable. Now able to do most everything, Kaufman is signing up friends and family to join her for this event.

Henneous has served as race marshall since the first Run for a Child event and is in elementary school in Bend. He was born with one leg significantly shorter than the other and was referred through our local screening clinic in 2004. He has been a patient of Shriners Hospital in Portland since he was nine months old.

COSC has entered into a partnership with Mosaic Medical to be its primary referring agency for children in Central Oregon. Children who might be eligible to receive care and don’t have a primary physician can contact Mosaic, and Mosaic Medical will see the child and make the referral to Shriners Hospitals for Children.

The Central Oregon Shrine Club thank sthe following generous Gold and Silver Run for a Child2015 sponsors: Les Schwab Tire Centers, Deschutes Brewery,Dr. Krueger DMD, Five Talent Software, Thompson Pump & Irrigation, SELCO Community Credit Union, Wells Fargo.
