2022 Oregon Student Mock Election (OSME)

The LWV of Oregon is continuing the tradition of the Student Mock Election for the November 2022 election. We would love to see as many Oregon students as possible, grades six through 12, have an opportunity to participate in the student voting process. Student Mock Election Day is October 18, 2022, which is also the last day for eligible voters (those who will be 18 by November 8) to register or update their registration for the November General Election.

Participating Deschutes County teachers will be sent a link to the student Mock Election printable ballot — which includes votes for Governor, U.S. Senator and Ballot Measure 114 (gun safety) — and County Measure 9-148 (Nonpartisan County Commissioner Election).

Teachers in Deschutes County, PLEASE SIGN UP. To participate in the Deschutes County Mock Election, contact mimi.alkire@gmail.com. Teachers will be provided detailed instructions, a Mock Election Ballot and a general lesson plan with several ideas as to how they might prepare students to vote intelligently.

2022 Y-ESSAY Contest

A primary mission of the League of Women Voters of Deschutes County (LWVDC) is to inform voters about ballot measures and candidate positions and to increase voter turnout. This year, we have an increased focus on young voters.

We believe young people are the best advocates to increase the voter turnout in their age group. To that end, LWVDC is hosting a student essay contest, Y-Essay! The subject is, “Why Vote?” (The ‘Y’ is for Yes, Youth and Why?) The winning essayists will receive an award of $500. The contest is open to Deschutes County high school seniors, Class of 2023. Details for entering, rules and judging criteria are available here and flyers will be posted in schools around Deschutes County.

The contest will begin early September. Judging will be done by a panel of LWVDC members, local teachers and community volunteers. Before the 2022 General Election, the winning essays will be published, and awards delivered.

ENTER the essay contest.

Teachers are invited to have their classes participate as a group or students can enter the contest individually. For information contact us at info@lwvdeschutes.org or cobishere@yahoo.com. Or go to our website and click on the Y-Essay Contest tab at the top of the site.

DONATE to the Y-Essay fund.

Our goal is to offer five or more awards. We already have a local donor matching up to the first $1000 in Y-Essay donations. Donations in any amount are greatly appreciated.

You can donate online here or send us a check payable to LWVDC, be sure to note Y-Essay on the check and mail to LWVDC, PO Box 1783, Bend OR 97709.
